APARTMENT THREE
Named the third most walkable neighborhood in Chicago, East Village is often considered by many people a neighborhood within a neighborhood. Bordered by busier streets populated with local restaurants and boutique shops, the area also has many quiet pockets filled with extensive collections of different residential typologies. A young couple approached Yu & Associates Collaborative to design and reimagine the interior of a duplex unit at a multi-family condo building.
Our team looked at the neighborhood for inspiration – a perfect balance of new and old + a mixture of modern and rustic. We preserved the original basic unit layout while reorganizing some programs to improve efficiency. New cabinetry and appliances modernized the kitchen as we intentionally proposed plumbing fixtures with a rough texture and vibrant colors. The unique 12’ ceiling presented an opportunity to extend the overall proportion and provided additional displays and storage. A new 8’ island with waterfall edges anchors the kitchen as it hides the wine fridge and other small appliances. Our design used polished slab backsplashes that match the island while perfectly contrasting with the textured sink faucet in front. The overall composition presents a cohesive and unified combination of contemporary and traditional. A similar color palette is used in two bathrooms, while the design concept extends through the entire home. Ultimately, our vision came to live in this vibrant, daylight-filled new home. |
